Five habits that make shopping in Kota easier
Across all of these guides, a few habits come up again and again. They are worth keeping in mind whatever you are buying:
- Look before you pay. Inspect textiles in daylight, try accessories on your own phone, and see the actual batch of stone you will receive rather than a sample.
- Ask who made it. Sellers who know their weavers and makers are usually more trustworthy, and more of your money reaches the person who did the work.
- Check the official mark. For Kota Doria, the GI logo or a handloom label; for chargers and power banks, the BIS registration number; for used phones, the IMEI on Sanchar Saathi.
- Get a bill. It is your proof of what you were told and your warranty. It also makes a complaint much easier if something goes wrong.
- Pay a fair price. Bargain politely in the bazaars, but remember that handmade work is priced thin and that the cheapest option is often a copy.
If a purchase does go wrong, go back to the seller first with your bill; most problems are settled at the counter. If not, the government’s National Consumer Helpline accepts complaints online.
How we write these guides
Our guides are practical and checkable. Where a rule, registration or official tool is involved, such as the GI registry, BIS certification, Sanchar Saathi or Udyam registration, we link to the official source so you can confirm the current position yourself. We do not name individual shops, publish invented ratings or list prices that will be out of date next month, and nobody pays to appear in a guide. Read our about page for more on how Kota Market works, and use the contact page to report an error or suggest a topic.
